Why Guest Wi-Fi
Needs Its Own Network

A plain-language guide for hotel and business owners: what network segmentation actually means, why a Wi-Fi password alone protects nothing, and the five things to ask your IT person for.

We see it in every second property we take on: one router, one Wi-Fi password, and everything on the same network — guests' phones next to the front-desk POS, the cameras, the booking system. It works, right up until the day it doesn't. This article explains, without jargon, why guest Wi-Fi must live on its own separate network — and exactly what to ask your IT person for.

The scenario that should worry you

A guest sits in your lobby with a laptop carrying malware — they don't even know it themselves. They join your Wi-Fi. If everything lives on one network, that laptop can "see" your till, your cameras, the reception PC with your customers' details. No hooded hacker required — an infected machine and a flat network are enough.

The reverse is just as true: a cheap camera with outdated firmware or a "smart" water heater can become the door through which someone reaches your genuinely sensitive systems.

What segmentation means — in plain terms

Segmentation means the network is cut into watertight compartments. In the properties we build, the rule is four:

An infected laptop on the guest network stays there: it sees the internet and nothing else. A guest's problem stops being your business's problem.

"But our Wi-Fi has a password"

The password controls who gets onto the network — not what they can see once they're on. The moment you hand the password to every guest (and print it on the room card), it protects nothing between the people connected. A password without segmentation is a locked front door on a house with no internal doors.

It's not just security — it's quality too

On a flat network, one guest downloading films can choke the POS mid-transaction. Proper segmentation also brings fairness rules: every room gets its share, the phone and the till get priority, and the Wi-Fi survives August. "Slow internet" complaints usually don't need a more expensive line — they need a correct setup.

What to ask your IT person for

You don't need to know how it's done — you need to know what to ask for:

  1. Separate networks for guests, staff, cameras and management.
  2. Cameras with no internet access — remote viewing only through a VPN.
  3. Fair bandwidth per room/user on the guest network.
  4. Proof, not reassurance: have them demonstrate, in front of you, that from the guest Wi-Fi neither the till, nor the cameras, nor the router are visible.
  5. Documentation: one diagram and one page explaining what exists and why.

That last item matters most. A network that is "probably fine" isn't fine — if it hasn't been tested, it's an assumption.

And the legal side

Customer details at reception, camera footage of faces, card payments — all of it is data you are obliged to protect (GDPR). An incident that started from open guest Wi-Fi is hard to defend as "we didn't know". Segmentation is one of the cheapest measures with the highest return — half a day to a day of work at most properties, using the equipment you already own.
